What makes this a HEALTHY Strawberry Banana Recipe?

Well, unlike other Strawberry Banana recipes, this one has an added bonus of being a “green smoothie” without looking green.

Honestly, once you add our secret ingredient, you won’t even taste it.

Why We LOVE Green Smoothies

We are huge green smoothie fans. However, for a number of reasons, it’s always a good idea to get as much variety in your diet as possible… especially when it comes to vegetables.

I can’t emphasize the importance of eating a wide variety of vegetables for good health (and fruits too, for that matter.) The greater the variety of vegetables you can get in your diet, the better. Each vegetable has its own unique antioxidant and phytonutrient profile and each vegetable offers something different as far as vitamins and minerals.

But let’s face it, other than for something like pumpkin for a pumpkin smoothie, there are not too many vegetables that blend all that well into smoothies.

Use Frozen Strawberries in this Healthy Strawberry Banana Smoothie:

Not only are frozen strawberries frozen at the source, but they also keep your smoothie cold and delicious. Using fresh strawberries can quickly reduce the temperature of your smoothie making it less desirable.

Our Secret Healthy Strawberry Banana Smoothie Ingredient:

Having said that, believe it or not, FROZEN cauliflower (NOT fresh) makes the perfect alternative to greens in this healthy strawberry banana smoothie. You honestly just can’t taste the cauliflower. And if you have picky kids, it’s a BIG perk that the cauliflower doesn’t change the color of the smoothie.

Use Frozen Cauliflower

Unlike fresh cauliflower, frozen cauliflower is blanched before it is packaged. For the purpose of a cauliflower smoothie recipe, the only purpose to blanching is that it “softens” the cauliflower a bit and neutralizes the flavor.

So, while you might not want to use frozen cauliflower for a recipe like Cauliflower Stir Fry Rice. Which is a recipe where you WANT to taste the cauliflower! Frozen cauliflower works perfectly in a green smoothie alternative recipe. And trust us, you DON’T want to taste the cauliflower!

Cauliflower Smoothie Benefits

Using cauliflower as a green smoothie alternative is a great way to balance hormones. I talk about reducing estrogen dominance naturally in my Brain-Fog Busting/ Hormone Balancing Smoothie recipe. Cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower (and cabbage, broccoli and brussls sprouts), are better than leafy greens.

For what it is worth, cauliflower works it’s hormone balancing magic through through phase 1 and phase 2 detoxifcation.

Get Large Servings of Leafy Greens Daily

But please don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely not saying you should ditch your greens. In fact, if you are familiar with our anti-inflammatory food pyramid, you know eating a large serving of nutrient-dense dark leafy greens every day. Getting these nutrients plays a very important role in our overall nutrition recommendations in the past and it still does.

However, when it comes to the practicalities of daily life, I find it so much more convenient to eat a salad than I do to make cauliflower dish. And of all the cruciferous vegetables, frozen cauliflower is the one that blends most easily and without any funky aftertaste into a smoothie.  These days, I simply prefer to get my daily cruciferous vegetable in my smoothie recipe and eat my greens in a salad. Of course you can always substitute kale or spinach for the cauliflower in the smoothie recipe below if you wish.

  2. I started this today and will post back at the end of the week. I didn’t have the cauliflower on hand and added Mct keto matcha powder. Was thinking of adding a little swerve. Ivy what is your opinion on swerve? Also this kind of made my stomach a little icky. WHIch ingredient might cause that?

    1. Ivy Larson says:

Hi Marissa! I am only just now catching up on emails and comments and apologize for the lengthy delay in responding. I don’t know what Mct matchs powder or Swerve is though? Do you have a link with more information on those 2? In the meantime, I would LOVE to hear how it is all going if you have tried it yet?

  3. I just made this and it’s delicious. Can you tell me if this is one serving or multiple servings. Thank you!

    1. Ivy Larson says:

Hi Jill! I am so happy to hear you like it =) As for how many it serves, I would say it’s really one BIG serving! Hope this helps?

  4. Wondering about the safety of using frozen vegetables that have not been cooked……listeria??

    1. Ivy Larson says:

Hi Ann, there is a teeny-tiny chance of getting some form of food-borne bacteria anytime you eat any raw vegetable (even salad!), but again, the chances really are VERY SMALL and the benefits far outweigh the risk (in my opinion!)

  5. If I have fresh cauliflower can I just freeze it? Or do i need to blanche it before?

    1. Ivy Larson says:

Hi Sanita, I think you should definitely blanch it first and THEN freeze it. Hope this helps?
