How to Make this Golden Milk Recipe

Golden milk is a sweet and spicy plant-based milk drink filled with turmeric and ginger. It has quickly gained popularity over the past few years for its anti-inflammatory and healing benefits, and is quickly becoming a well-known, common drink!

Not only will you find this drink in many health based tea, coffee, or juice shops, you can even find it in convenient, grab-and-go bottles at health food stores like Whole Foods! As many brands are recognizing the demand for clean, on-the-go nutrition, they’re stepping up to the plate with more whole ingredient, clean convenient foods (like Pop and Bottle and Rebbl). This is quickly making clean eating much more sustainable for traveling, and days where you don’t have time to spend in the kitchen. Enjoy this recipe either hot or cold, reaping the anti-inflammatory, and immune boosting properties!

We are so grateful for brands offering convenient, grab-and-go clean food options. We actually utilize these ourselves when we are traveling or out and about! However, making your own healthy food from home is usually more cost effective, and still our go to when it is an option!

This Golden Milk Recipe is quick and easy to make, and requires only a few, easily-sourced ingredients, and a high-speed blender. You’re looking at 15 minutes from start to finish, and more like 5 minutes if you prefer it iced!

While this recipe is made to be enjoyable (and it is!), it’s equally made for health benefits and healing! Let’s take a closer look at the ingredients…

Ingredients in our Golden Milk Recipe

So how exactly do you make a Golden Milk Recipe from scratch? It’s quite simple, and requires few ingredients. Rest assured that this is one of our fail-proof recipes that requires little time in the kitchen, and minimal clean up…

Plant-Based Milk

The base of this recipe is water, and a plant-based milk. While we prefer coconut milk in this particular recipe, any milk works well!

Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice that has been used medicinally for years now. This is due to its abilities to reduce inflammation, improve immunity, aid in weight loss, improve mood, reduce oxidative stress, increase HDL (good) cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, and much more!

It significantly boosts the body’s detoxifying glutathione levels, and when paired with ginger, is even better!

Ginger

Ginger is another potent anti-inflammatory often used for its medicinal properties. It helps to reduce inflammation, soothe nausea, has been known to reduce pain, and so much more. In addition, ginger is known to further boost turmeric’s absorption and bioavailability.

Dates

We love using natural sweeteners, especially whole sweeteners like dates! Consuming natural sugar is nothing like refined, processed sugar. While refined sugar is an empty calorie, promoting inflammation and lower immunity, natural sweeteners like dates are full of fiber, helping to boost immunity, and reduce inflammation!

Hemp Seeds

Hemp seeds are tiny, but POWERFUL “super-fruits“. These tiny seeds are anti-inflammatory due to their omega-3 and omega-6 fats, full of gama-linolenic acid, high in protein, and more. They also have an amazing ability to make recipes thick and creamy, make an incredible milk, and are a “super-fruit” we often add to our smoothies, cereals, and salads!

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice adds a mild citrusy flavor, and boosts the detoxification properties of our Golden Milk Recipe. While this ingredient is optional, we think it’s a great addition!

Cinnamon, Cardamom, Black Pepper

Cinnamon and cardamom function as spices in this Golden Milk Recipe. Combined, they give this Golden Milk a warm chai flavor. The black pepper helps to boost the bioavailability of turmeric!

How to Add More Turmeric into Your Diet

Like mentioned above, turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory that exhibits over 150 potentially therapeutic activities. Turmeric is the star ingredient in my Latte recipe. Capable of anti-inflammation, boosted immunity, improved digestion, and even a helpful for depression and cancer, turmeric is one of the most therapeutic spices that exist. The benefits of turmeric are truly too many to even include here.

If you are serious about following a clean, anti-inflammatory diet, then you should consider adding turmeric (and ginger!) to your daily regimen.

Should You Give Up Your Morning Coffee?

I want to dedicate part of this article to those who are looking for coffee substitutes. Before we jump into this, I want to make it clear that we don’t think coffee is unhealthy or bad! We often drink coffee ourselves, and offer numerous healthy coffee recipes right here on Clean Cuisine. However, we aren’t naive to the fact that many people cannot tolerate coffee (especially those with digestive issues or diseases). Others may just have a distaste for it in general.

We don’t agree that coffee is bad for you. Besides, there is actually very little legitimate research that coffee is bad for you.

Coffee beans are full of antioxidants. Antioxidants protect against oxidative stress by “mopping up” damaging free radicals that have been implicated in cancer, heart disease and the aging process in general.

Golden Milk Tea and Turmeric Tea are almost the same…is it more of a flavor preference? I am looking for the most anti inflammatory drink to make for my Dad. The Turmeric shot you have has really helped his daily and terrible RLS! Still there but a little better, often helping with sleep. Thank you!!!

  2. Alissa Pearson says:

Have you ever tried adding protein power and/or collagen to this recipe to make it more of a smoothie? Just curious!

    1. Aimee Harris Niedosik says:

We’ve not, no — but please give it a try and let us know how it turns out!

  3. I have been on the search for the best golden milk recipe. I love golden milk and wanted to find my “go to” – search over! This is it! Just the right blend of spices and milk and sweetness etc- I used large Medjool dates that I get from Aldi and Trader joes so I only used 4 dates, and I did add just a splash more milk and water for my taste. My friend liked it as is, Oh and I used some of it to add to my brewed tea to make a quick chai!
Thank you for an easy and delicious recipe!

    1. Aimee Harris Niedosik says:

EMILY! This is the best comment to read, thank you so much. I am thrilled you enjoyed it and your little changes are perfect!

  4. Hello! This article mentions that coffee might be okay or even good for us – and I’m just wondering if DECAF coffee enjoys the same benefits that regular coffee offers? Thoughts?

    1. Madison Suttles says:

      Hi Pamela,

Decaf coffee normally undergoes a rigorous and chemical-filled process to remove the decaf, which minimizes some of the health benefits. However, Swiss water processed organic decaf is different, and is a fantastic option for maintaining those health benefits, void of caffeine!

      Hope this helps,
      Madi

  5. It’s sooo good. Do you have an idea of how many calories might be in each cup?

    1. Aimee Harris Niedosik says:

If you look at the ingredients you are using to make your latte, you should be able to calculate out using the products you’re choosing!! Let us know what you come up with!

  6. Ivy why is this recipe have “Chai” in it’s name? I don’t see any Chai Tea (?) in it? Should I be substituting that for the water listed?

    1. Aimee Harris Niedosik says:

Pamela, Chai simply means tea mixed with strong spices, like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger and black peppercorns!

  7. for the golden turmeric drink can you omit caradmon if you do t have it

    1. Ivy Larson says:

Hi Alison, I apologize for not responding sooner, somehow your comment got lost in the shuffle. But yes, you can definitely omit the cinnamon if you don’t have it!

  8. I’ve just made your golden chai turmeric latte, in fact I’m drinking it as I type. It’s more delicious than I imagined it wold be and really satisfying. I was a bit suspicious as I was making it but I am so amazingly impressed. One of the things I like is that you can taste the hint of all the different ingredients and I particularly like the hint of citrus and ginger.

It’s now on my definitely make regularly list but now the challenge is to get my teenage children to try and enjoy.

    Thank you for the recipe.

    1. Ivy Larson says:

Hi Eileen! Oh you just totally made my day with your positive feedback =) I am SO happy you like the latte as much as I do. Thank you for taking the time to let me know! I hear you on the teens though (I have a 17-year old!)

  9. Dianne Ness says:

I just made it! I doubled the recipe and substituted six dried figs for the dates as I did not have dates. I am assuming it was for sweetness? Is it a good substitute nutritionally? It is just nicely sweet and absolutely delicious! Can’t wait to feel the effects! Thank you.

    1. Ivy Larson says:

oh YAY! So glad to know you made it Dianne =) And yes, Figs are a GREAT substitute for the dates (I think they may actually be more nutrient-dense, I know they are a good source of plant-based calcium) And yes, I added the dates for sweetness, but I think I will try it with figs next time myself…

      1. I have been adding tumeric to my daily diet and feeling the positive effects. Golden milk was a quick and tasty drink before heading out the door to work or the gym. Also tried it in my coffee as a flavored creamer and it was great.

  10. Dianne Ness says:

Hi Ivy! Thank you so much for the effort you put into your health and in your generosity of sharing it with others. I am looking forward to trying this. I am going to sweeten it with figs….just because I don’t have dates right now. It may have an interesting texture. I am looking to replace SOME of my coffee, and also add turmeric to my diet and get off anti-inflammatory meds. Thanks again!

    1. Ivy Larson says:

Hi Dianne! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment–and for your positive feedback. I am so happy to know the information helps you! Also, if you are trying to get off meds for inflammation, you might also really want to look into pharmaceutical grade fish oil (about 2,000 to 3,000 mg a day). It is is one of the strongest anti-inflammatories available without a prescription. I’ve been taking it for almost 20 years to control my MS symptoms and I really do think it makes a difference!

      1. Hi, Ivy. I take fish oil for multiple corneal conditions. I’m curious to know which brand you use, if you don’t mind sharing. Thanks, Kim

        1. Ivy Larson says:

Hi Kim, I think it is GREAT that you take fish oil because it has such a broad range of benefits and has been heavily researched in the medical literature. As for which brand to take, you want to make sure to take a pharmaceutical grade fish oil that is free of dioxins, PCB’s, mercury, etc. Nordic Naturals makes an EXCELLENT one! As for which one I take, I take our Clean Cuisine brand of AM/ PM supplements that includes a pharmaceutical grade fish oil along with evening primrose oil and broad spectrum of vitamins and mineral ( https://cleancuisine.com/clean-supplements/ ) But if you just want the fish oil, you absolutely can’t go wrong with Nordic Naturals!
