Stretching for Relaxation: Positive, Healthy Benefits
Stretching is a process of muscle and soft tissue elongation that helps to create a supple and limber body as well as promote relaxation and an overall sense of well-being. But, did you know the importance of stretching for helping to relieve chronic pain? A regular stretching program can help alleviate muscle tension that can be a contributing factor in day to day chronic pain. If you have a condition such as multiple sclerosis or fibromyalgia a regular stretching routine can often be used as an all-natural therapy in place of taking muscle relaxants (or as a compliment to your medication.)
You can read more about the Importance of Stretching in this complete article and also watch the stretching video above to see a program that Andy and I like to do. Keep in mind, the goal with stretching is not to become hyper-flexible. The goal of a stretching program should be to improve range of motion (or maintain range of motion) and relieve muscle tightness, stress and anxiety. You should never ever stretch to the point of pain. Keep in mind, some people are more flexible than others so don’t compare yourself to
your yoga instructor! Stretch at your own pace, listen to your body and do what feels good.
