Health Product Review: How to Pick a Healthy Cereal…Moja Mix Premium Custom Mixed Cereal (Watch Video)

My good friend Cherie is helping me scout out the coolest “Hot & Healthy Finds” for our health product reviews and she just found one that I am totally crazy about! It’s called “MoJa Mix” and it’s a premium custom mixed cereal. This is cereal like you’ve never had before! With Mojo Mix, you are in complete control over every single ingredient, which means you can “eat clean” and avoid unhealthy ingredients. Since the ingredients determine whether the cereal is healthy or not, your best bet for finding a healthy cereal is to select the ingredients yourself. It takes all of five minutes to place an order. In the video below, we explain more:

Mix It!

To get started simply go to and click on “Mix It”. Then follow three simple steps:

  1. Choose a whole grain “base mix”
  2. Choose a dried fruit (do a single fruit or pick a combination, your choice)
  3. Choose nuts and / or seeds (again, you can choose just one of each or add a bunch, it’s up to you)

As a fourth option you can choose fun “Extras” such as raw cacoa nibs or chocolate coffee beans.

It’s Easy to “Eat Clean”!

As I mentioned above, you are in total control over every single ingredient (did I mention how much I LOVE this!?)…so you have the option to make your cereal as healthy as you want it. If you are mostly concerned with “clean eating” you’ll want to choose the “Purity Buckwheat Granola” as your base. This is seriously about as healthy as it gets! The “Purity Buckwheat Granola” is a mix of sprouted buckwheat, sprouted sunflower seeds, sprouted pumpkin seeds and just a dab of agave nectar. (Note: sprouting releases all the vital nutrients stored within the whole grain). Also, the buckwheat granola is dehydrated at low temperatures instead of baked.

As for as mixing in the dried fruit, you can’t go wrong with any of the options. The sweetness comes entirely from nutrient-rich and fiber-rich dried fruits, not from added empty-calorie sugars and syrups (which is most likely what you’ll get if you grab any old cereal off the grocery shelf). I also LOVE that you can mix and match to create your own favorite fruit combinations. Choose strawberries and blueberries, pears and peaches or how about dried banana chips with pineapple, papaya and pear? YUMMY! They also have exotic fruits such as Fuyu persimmons, mulberries and goji berries. By the way, I highly recommend you add the goji berries to the mix. Considered a “superfruit”, goji berries are hard to find but they are among the most antioxidant-rich foods on the planet. If you are into keeping score, you’ll be into knowing that the ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) score for gogi berries is approximately 10 times higher than for blueberries (this is pretty impressive since blueberries are well known for being a super antioxidant-rich food). The ORAC score is basically a test tube analysis that measures the antioxidant levels of food. The higher the ORAC score, the more antioxidants the food contains.

After you choose your grain and fruit, you can then mix in a wide variety of super healthy nuts and seeds. Choose from hemp seeds, walnuts, flax seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, cashew nuts, peanuts, pistachios, macadamia nuts, sunflower seeds, poppy seeds, sesame seeds and lots more. Oh! and if you aren’t familiar with [intlink id=”1519″ type=”post”]hemp seeds you can read more [/intlink] (you might be inspired to add hemp to the mix!)

Personalize It!

If you haven’t already noticed, I love so many things about MoJa Mix I can hardly contain myself. But another feature I’m crazy about is that you can personalize the label! Cherie personalized ours to say “Hot and Healthy Mix” but you can put whatever you want on it. Everyone in the family can create their own custom-mixed cereal with their very own name on it (how cute is that?) By the way, this is a GREAT way to get your kids to eat a healthy cereal! I guarantee if your kids go online and custom-mix their own cereal and it arrives at your door with their name on it, they’re gonna eat it!

Mix Identity

It keeps getting better! Each bag comes with a “Mix Identity” number. This way, if you find a combo you especially like you can refer to the mix identity number to easily refill your order. By the way, the “Mix Identity” number for the “Hot and Healthy Mix” Cherie made is: #14227. Ours included: purity buckwheat granola, walnuts, goji berries, fuyu persimmons, coconut chips and mulberries.

How Do We Eat It?

Cherie keeps a bag under her desk for a mid-afternoon snack. On weekends when she’s taking her 2-year old daughter to her play dates, swim lessons, etc. Cherie likes to keep a bag in the car…it’s great for on the go snack attacks! Kids love it too. It really is the perfect healthy snack for kids. As for me, my favorite way to eat it is on fresh fruit for a perfect crunchy topping. Last night I ate as a dessert; I had a bowl of fresh raspberries, I poured a little pure almond extract on top, a spoon-full of fresh whipped cream and a few tablespoons of MoJa Mix. Delish!!
