How to Make This Warm Banana Smoothie Recipe

When most people think of smoothies, they think of icy cold fruit, blended into a smooth and creamy drink. And while this is true for most smoothies, as the weather cools down, we crave warmer smoothies instead! Same concept as a typical smoothie, except we start with a hot liquid instead of cold. It’s truly the perfect way to start your chilly morning!

We started this banana smoothie off with some hot water, and then added all of the flavors of banana bread! All you need is a single ripe banana, walnuts, dates, cinnamon, vanilla, and fresh ginger, and voilà, you have banana bread in a cup! Blend it up in a high speed blender for an extra smooth, creamy smoothie. A truly great way to use those extra ripe bananas you promise yourself you’re going to make banana bread with (been there, done that)!

While we are on the subject of bananas and sugar I have to quickly address two questions I am frequently asked…

Are Bananas Good for You? Are Bananas Fattening?

Whenever I share a banana-rich recipe I am always shocked at how many times I am asked about whether bananas are in fact a healthy fruit. I get this question so often, that I actually wrote an entire article on it with much more detail than we have space to go into in this recipe post.

bananas

Here’s the deal; ALL fruits are healthy!! There is absolutely no such thing as a “fattening” fruit (or a “fattening” or unhealthy vegetable either for that matter.)

So yes, bananas are good for you. So are all other “whole” carbohydrates that are eaten in their natural and unrefined form.

Health Benefits of Bananas

Bananas are an incredibly nutrient-dense fruit, filled with phytonutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants! Here’s just a few reasons they’re so incredible for your health!

Bananas are High in Fiber, with Low Calories

One medium-sized banana is just over 100 calories. They’re also full of fiber, including resistant starch that helps control blood sugar and reduce fat storage after you eat.

Bananas May Help Lower Blood Pressure, and Support Bone Health

Bananas are full of potassium, which is beneficial in lowering blood pressure. They are also full of magnesium, which is essential for muscle and bone health.

Bananas are Full of Antioxidants

Bananas contain anti-aging antioxidants like vitamin C. They also contain anti-aging and disease-fighting phytonutrients!

Bananas Contain Amino Acids

Did you know bananas are the only fruit to contain the amino acid Tryptophan and Vitamin B6? Tryptophan and vitamin B6 work synergistically to help your body produce the feel-good neurotransmitter, serotonin.

Banana Smoothie Recipe Iced

Like stated above, this Warm Banana Smoothie was created for cold winter mornings, so you can enjoy your smoothies all year long! However, winter isn’t the only time you can enjoy this smoothie, and with a couple small modifications, you can turn this into a warm-weather smoothie as well!

If you love iced coffees as much as we do, or it’s not quite cold outside, then you may prefer your banana smoothie cold. If so, just follow the instructions below for our warm banana smoothie, but instead of hot water, use cold. Then fill a glass with ice and pour the smoothie into the glass, filling it to the top.

  1. This was delicious. I substituted almond milk and a little coconut cream for the water. It was very decadent. Looking forward to trying the rest of your recipes.

  3. Great for breakfast OR for late evening snack.

    1. Aimee Harris Niedosik says:

      Yes, I absolutely agree!!

  4. Thank you for a hot banana smoothie recipe. Eating bananas helps to keep my blood pressure in check – really. I try to eat one or two a day. This is especially helpful when I have had a salty day, or a salty meal. Banana smoothies made with ice are hard to look forward to in the cold months, so this is really nice. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth. One date or no date works for me, depending on the ripeness of the banana. I also like more cinnamon, which helps regulate blood sugar. The good fat in walnuts makes it a great ingredient – genius. This little drink nudges all systems in the right direction which is the best medicine in my humble opinion, and can be tweaked according to taste. I did warm up my walnuts a bit and soaked dates in some hot water for a couple of minutes to help it stay a warm beverage.

      Tina,

Thank you so much for the positive review. We’re so happy you’ve enjoyed it!

  5. My friend and I have been tampering with the idea of a hot smoothie on a cold day but we didn’t know how it would work. Are your hot smoothies thick and have the same texture as a cold smoothie would ?

    1. Ivy Larson says:

Hi Madilyn, I apologize for not responding sooner, somehow your comment got lost in the shuffle. As for the hot smoothie, yes! It is definitely like a rather thick regular smoothie, of course you can always thin it out by adding more hot water if you want it less thick. I hope this helps?

  6. Katherine says:

    Hi Ivy,

This is a wonderful recipe. I loved this so much that I featured it in my best of post 11 Warm Smoothies For Winter.
I have not shared the exact recipe, only one image from here, a small quote and all credits given to you and linked back to this page.

    1. Ivy Larson says:

Hi Katherine! Oh my gosh, I am only just now seeing this, but THANK YOU so much!! You just totally made my day =)

  7. I would love to try this but find dates way too sweet for me. Do you have any thoughts on a replacement ingredient?

    Thanks!

    1. Ivy Larson says:

Hi, Oh gosh, you know, I bet you could get away with just not adding any sweetener then. The bananas are pretty sweet as-is, you know? However, if you happen to have dates on hand you could try just using 1 instead of 3. OR you could try 2 or 3 teaspoons pure maple syrup, which I think would work perfectly also. If you do give it a try please let me know how it turns out!

  8. This is delicious…thanks so much. I added a bit of hemp protein and hemp hearts since it was a post-run drink. Love it.

    1. Ivy Larson says:

Hi Beth! So so happy you liked it =) I love the hemp addition too!!

  9. I’d like to try your hot smoothies but unfortunately I don’t see the nutritional value for each of them.
Is there a reason why the the nutritional value was not provided? I.e. Calories

    1. Ivy Larson says:

      Hi Judy,

I know so many people interested in healthy eating really want to know the calories, carbs, fat grams, etc in their recipes. But yes, we specifically do not include the nutritional content for a reason. We discuss it in detail in our book, but this link should also help clarify:

Hopefully this makes sense? If not, please do let me know and I will try to explain further 😉

    1. I used organic soy milk instead of water in order to up the calories. (I’m one of the skinny ones on the planet) One can use any other non-diary milk if desired. It was delicious & creamy. I also heated everything in the microwave after blending it. I don’t have a vita-mix, so I heated the almonds & ginger in hot water for a few minutes to soften them, then discarded the water & added the mixture to the milk. Walla! a delicious warm smoothie! I actually used a spoon it was do thick!

      1. Ivy Larson says:

YUM!! That sounds amazing Olivene. Thank you so much for sharing =)

  10. I made your smoothie this morning cos I still feel it’s still too cold to have a cold smoothie. I was a little skeptical as I thought all smoothies should have some sort of milk whether it be rice milk or almond milk etc. It is so yummy. I thank you so much for posting. I thought I better put 3 dates but I think 2 would be enough as it was quite sweet. Thanks again. Loved it 🙂

    1. Ivy Larson says:

So so happy you liked it!! Thank you for taking the time to let me know 😉

    2. I am so happy to have found this on a snowy April day in the north American midwest – perfect! I added a dash of collagen powder to thicken it up because it turned out a tad more thin than I wanted, but the flavor is delicious!!
